Maker’s Journal Entry #001: I Sat Down to Sew Again… and It Was Awkward (and Wonderful)
It had been four, maybe five years.
Life got full. Creativity got quiet.
But this past season, I finally sat down with a clear purpose: to sew a minky blanket for someone I love as a Christmas gift.
It was planned… and still, it felt strange.
Threading the machine felt like a mountain.
Not because I didn’t know how, but because it had been so long.
The steps came back slowly—but threading the machine unlocked something. A tiny click of “I can do this.”
And that was all I needed.
I started sewing one of the blankets. The fabric stretched more than I remembered. My seams weren’t perfect. I forgot how slippery minky can be.
But somewhere around the halfway point… something shifted.
The rhythm came back.
The sound of the machine. The feel of fabric under my hands.
The way sewing invites you into the moment without demanding anything more from you.
I didn’t finish the blanket that first day. But I got further than I expected.
And I remembered something important:
I need this.
Not for the finished project—but for the process itself.

It’s different now… because I’m different.
Before, I rushed. I sewed late at night. I wanted to “get things done.”
Now, I want to be in it. I want to enjoy the stretch, the seams, the setup. Even the part where I forgot to pin well and ended up with a bit of bunching. (Oops.)
Creativity is coming back—not like a storm, but like a soft current.
It doesn’t feel like pressure anymore.
It feels like presence.
If you’re thinking about coming back to your creativity—this is your gentle nudge.
Thread the machine. Touch the fabric. Sit for five minutes.
You don’t have to finish anything. Just start something.
That’s where it all begins again.
Maker’s Notes:
Curious about the minky I used for this blanket? I loved the softness and stretch — though next time I’m definitely pinning more carefully 😅
